What’s more annoying than a broken pencil?
Hultafors, a premium Swedish toolmaker asked me to create an OEM brand-able mechanical pencil
My role in the project was as to develop a form that captures a rugged design, developing the ideas through high resolution digital sketches.
From ten plus ideas…
Quick thumbnail sketches helped me explore ideas and discuss them with the client, finding interesting forms to bring forward.
To four concepts…
from 2D into 3D, the forms were explored together with their holster.
The final design intent, a rugged, ridged design with a clear shoulder, giving a strong, bold form but also serving as a grip to easily remove the pencil from the holster.
An octagonal "shoulder" design giving a rugged and angular form, as well as a secure grip to remove from the holster, with a smooth transitions to a comfortable grip. The holster features a robust belt clip and an integrated sharpener.
